It is a new era for the Jaguar F Type. Jaguar’s latest 2-lt Ingenium family engine is offered in an F-Type, starting price from £49,900. This recent move on the part of Jaguar is a clear indication of the company’s decision to increase its competitive power in emerging markets with high import duties, and to compete with the Porsche 718 family.
A 2-lt engine may sound too small for the F-Type. However, the power output will satisfy many new Jaguar customers. The 2-lt turbo petrol engine produces 300 HP and 400 nm of torque from 1500 rpm. These outstanding power results are achieved by using an in-house developed algorithm for the electrohydraulic valve-train to control valve-lift. This improves power and efficiency, helped achieved by the turbo chargers.
The engine is connected to a 8-speed QuickShift automatic gearbox which offers a locking torque converter that improves the acceleration and efficiency figures.
The performance figures of the 2-lt engine are very impressive;
Engine capacity: 1,997
Cylinders: Four in-line
Valves per cylinder: 4; DOHC, dual independent variable cam timing, electrohydraulic fully variable intake valve lift system
Fuel injection: 200bar direct injection
Boosting system: Single twin-scroll turbocharger with ceramic ball bearings
Power PS (kW): 300 (221) @ 5,500rpm
Torque Nm (lb ft): 400 (295) @ 1,500-4,500rpm
Thanks to the innovative technologies from the JLR, although this engine is marginally slower than the V6 engine, its superior performance can be explained by the power of the 2-lt engine and by weight savings. Despite the smaller displacement, with the new engine Jaguar offers a unique acoustic experience. Its engineers have developed a perfect sounds harmony to deliver an engaging driving experience that matches the Jaguar DNA.
The F-Type also offer contemporary driving assistance systems. This enables Jaguar to engage with the younger tech-savvy customer. The F-Type comes with these assistance systems (Autonomous Emergency Braking, Traffic Sign Recognition, Adaptive Speed Limiter, Lane Keep Assist and LED headlights).
The F-Type is built on an aluminium body structure to reduce weight and increase safety in the event of a crash. The whole drive train consists of all round aluminium double wishbone suspension to offer better handling and weight saving. Thanks to the weight saving platform and the smaller engine, 52 kg is removed from the F-Type. As a result, engineers have refined the body to avoid any unbalanced weight distribution.
Like the other F-Types, the 2-lt version features an electric steering wheel designed to offer an engaging driving experience with direct feedback, thanks to the Torque vectoring system.
Overall, the 2-lt F-Type is a new chapter in the future of Jaguar cars, and shows the innovative solutions that Jaguar is introducing in its search for more efficient and faster cars. Also, we can’t ignore the positive impact of the smaller displacement for markets in which the taxation is punitive for high displacement engines. However, the F-Type inherits the DNAs from the iconic E-Type. Introduction of the 2-lt engine is a good decision for the business, however it conflicts the DNA and the heritage.
