The Ferrari 812 Superfast is probably the most unpredictable branding exercise to come from Ferrari. The 812 Superfast brand did not appear from anywhere. In fact, the Ferrari 500 Superfast from the 1960s was the starting the point. Ferrari brought the 1960s branding back to modern life.

The 812 Superfast replaces the F12berlinatta. As the LaFerrari is no longer available, the 812 Superfast is the fastest Ferrari you can buy at the moment. Despite the radical branding, the engine is still a naturally aspirated V12 that is placed just behind the front-axle. This V12 might be the last naturally aspirated engine from Ferrari, therefore the 812 Superfast will be definitely a collector’s item in future.

The innovations of the 812 Superfast start with EPS. For the first-time Ferrari offers an electric steering wheel and leaves the hydraulic system in the past. Ferrari made this decision as part of its fuel efficiency and weight saving strategy.

The innovations of the 812 Superfast are not limited to the EPS. The V12 offers other new technologies. The direct injection system reaches the 350-bar level, the control for the variable geometry inlet tracts are true reflections from the naturally aspirated F1 engines. These innovations derived from the F1 not only improve the performance figures, but also reduce the emissions levels. The 812 Superfast generates 800 HP at 8500 rpm and 718 nm torque at 7000 rpm.

The V12 can deliver 80% of its torque at 3500 rpm. This helps to improve comfort for long journeys, in that the driver doesn’t have to downshift the gearbox for acceleration. This makes the 812 Superfast not only the fastest Ferrari but also one of the most comfortable GT cruisers.

The 812 Superfast offers another innovation, the Virtual Short Wheelbase 2.0. This technology enables the 812 Superfast to steer more precisely with the help of rear-wheel steering. As the rear-wheel steering creates a short-wheelbase effect, the turning circle and cornering performances are significantly improved. Both city and high-speed driving experiences are improved thanks to this technology.

The transmission is a 7-speed F1 dual clutch that has been improved to meet the 812 Superfast’s driving characteristics. The shifting times are also improved by 30% to make it faster than the F12berlinetta. The gearbox ratios are shortened by 6% to deliver extra engine power more effectively. Thus, the driver doesn’t have to shift into a higher gear too early during the acceleration process.

Overall, the Ferrari 812 Superfast is a reflection of the future of Ferrari. More luxurious, more dynamic and more efficient. The technology transfer from the F1 to road cars offer significantly improved performance and greater efficiency upgrades compared with Ferrari’s competitors. Unfortunately, Ferrari is also heading for the electric steering wheel and this V12 will be the last naturally aspirated V12. However, these unique characteristics make the 812 Superfast a collector’s item – the first Ferrari to offer an electric steering wheel with the traditional V12.
