Audi 100GL

In direct opposition and in secret to the Volkswagen board, the 1968 Audi 100 was born. An instant commercial success this Audi was the first in the series of front engine water-cooled cars from the Volkswagen group famous for its rear engine air-cooled models. The story goes like this - In 1965 Volkswagen purchased Auto Union (Audi, DKW, Horch and Wanderer) from Mercedes as demand for the Beetle had outstripped Volkswagen''s production capacity - Auto Union had a nearly new production plant at Ingolstadt that was quickly converted for Beetle assembly. With poor sales of the DKW F102 and the new Audi F103 failing to prove itself in the market the Volkswagen boss Heinrich Nordhoff in the belief that the rear engine air-cooled layout was the future gave orders that no further Auto Union models (incl Audi) be developed. It was an engineer by the name of Ludwig Kraus that failed to share Nordhoffs view and set about in secret developing the Audi 100. The first Nordhoff learned about the the project was the presentation of a production ready prototype! Thankfully for Audi fans, Nordhoff gave it the thumbs up. Shown to the press on 26th November 1968, the C1 platform Audi 100 was the company''s largest car and spawned several variants, two and four door saloons and a fast back coupe. Named the 100 after the then engine output of 100ps it surpassed the sales expectations of Volkswagen to the extend additional production had to be set up at Volkswagen''s own plant in Wolfsburg. By 1971 the 500,000th Audi was produced making it the most successful model in the company''s history at the time. The top of the range 100GL was introduced in 1972 and featured the 1.9L engine formerly used in only the Fastbback Coupe S.

EXTERIOR
Fully repainted in Iberian red the exterior of this 100GL is in fantastic condition. Once owned by a professional car detailing expert the paint and chrome have been pampered to the very best treatments. The paint work has a deep glossy shine and the chrome is in immaculate condition.

INTERIOR
The beige cloth interior has stood the test of time well. It is clean with minimal wear to the usual places. The wood lining that runs around the dash is in good condition with no cracks or holes. The carpets are original and while being light have resisted any major wear or dirt.

ENGINE & TRANSMISSION
Having been thoroughly checked over by NBA sports cars in Dunsfold the engine and transmission are in fine fettle. The carb needed a slight adjustment for cold start, the points were replaced and the ignition timing checked and reset. A small oil leak was traced to the interior mechanisms in the fuel pump, which was of course duly changed for a new item.

WHEELS, TYRES & BRAKES
The chrome centre caps are in excellent condition and the wheels wrapped in radial tyres with plenty of tread. The brakes pull the car to a stop in a straight line.

HISTORY FILE
This Audi 100 was purchased by its original owner in August 1972, he kept the car for the next 25 years until it was passed in his will to his wife. She never used the car so it sat in her garage for 5 years until she also passed away.
At this point the car was nearly sent to the scrap yard, but luckily it was saved by a chap in Norwich. He then spent the next 5-6 years doing a complete restoration with NOS Audi parts and then had the car fully resprayed in Iberian Red.
In 2007 the car was bought by an Audi enthusiast and classic Audi forum member with an extensive collection of early Audi's. The car was shown at 'Audi Driver International' in 2007 where it came runner up. It was then invited to Ultimate Dubs in 2009 as a foyer display car.
The current owner purchased the car last year and showed it at 'Audi In The Park' where it won best Audi pre 2000. It was also shown at the 'Westside Show' where it came runner up in the Audi section.
The original owner manual and service stations book is still with the car and this 100 is believed to be the only RHD manual on the road.
